Drain Cleaning for Slow and Clogged Drains

Drain cleaning clears the clog in a sink, tub, toilet, laundry line, or floor drain and gets the water moving again. Our crew finds what caused it, clears it with the tool that fits that line, and runs water to test the flow before we pack up. You get the price before any work starts.

Which drain is giving you trouble?

Tap the drain that is slow or stopped. You will see what usually causes it, how we fix it, and what you can safely do before we get there. Drain cleaning is one of our drain and sewer services, and most single-drain clogs are a one-visit job.

Kitchen sinkUsually a same-visit fix
Usual cause

Grease, food scraps, and coffee grounds cool and stick inside the trap and the line behind the wall. Each meal adds a layer until the opening is too small.

How we fix it

We cable the line to open it and pull out what we can. If grease has coated the pipe far down the line, jetting cleans it back to the wall.

Before we get there

Turn off the disposal and stop running water. Do not pour in chemical openers.

Causes by room

What clogs drains, room by room

Every room sends something different down the pipe. Hard water in much of Ventura County leaves mineral scale inside drain lines, and that rough surface catches grease and hair faster. Older homes with cast iron drains build up rust and scale on the inside, which narrows the pipe over time.

Most calls

Kitchen

Grease is the big one. It goes down warm, cools in the pipe, and grabs every bit of food that follows. Coffee grounds, rice, and eggshells settle in with it. A jammed or humming disposal is a different problem, and that is garbage disposal repair, not a clog.

Why it comes back

A cable opens the line, but grease that coats the pipe farther down catches the next batch. When a kitchen line clogs every few months, that is our cue to suggest jetting.

For restaurants

Commercial kitchens clog faster and harder. A regular drain cleaning or jetting schedule keeps the line open between grease trap visits.

Bathrooms

Bathroom sinks

Hair, soap, toothpaste, and shaving cream. Most slow bathroom sinks clog right at the pop-up stopper or in the trap under the sink.

If both sinks on a double vanity are slow, the clog is past the traps, in the line they share. That one takes a cable, not a plunger.

Bathrooms

Tubs and showers

Hair and soap twist into a rope a few feet down the line, past where a plastic hair tool can reach. The drain slows a little every week.

Toilets

Too much paper, wipes, and small objects. If the toilet rocks, runs, or leaks at the base, it needs toilet repair instead.

Laundry and floor drains

Lint and sand pack into laundry standpipes. Floor drains collect dirt from garages and utility rooms, and they show a main line backup first.

Cable or jetter: which one your drain needs

Both clear clogs. They solve different problems. We pick the tool for the clog in front of us and tell you why, and we never sell you jetting a simple clog does not need.

Drain cable, or snake

A spinning steel cable breaks up the clog and pulls out what it grabs. It is fast and it is the right call for most single drains.

Hydro jetter

High-pressure water scours the whole pipe wall clean. Read how hydro jetting works if your drain keeps clogging.

01Which drain it is and how far down the line the clog sits
02How we get in: a cleanout, the fixture itself, a roof vent, or pulling a toilet
03What the clog is made of, and whether it is one clog or buildup along the pipe
04Whether a sewer camera inspection is needed to see the main line
Prevention

Keep drains clear between visits

A few habits keep most homes from calling us for the same drain twice. None of them cost anything.

Do

Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before they go in the sink.
Use strainers in kitchen sinks, tubs, and showers, and empty them often.
Run cold water with the disposal and keep it running a few seconds after.
Add a lint catcher to the washer drain hose.
Pull and clean pop-up stoppers in bathroom sinks now and then.

Do not

Pour grease or oil down any drain, even with hot water behind it.
Flush wipes, including the ones labeled flushable.
Rinse coffee grounds or eggshells into the sink.
Rely on chemical openers. They are hard on older pipes and rarely clear a real clog.
Ignore gurgling from several drains. That is the main line asking for help.

Sewage backing up into the house is not a wait-and-see problem. Call right away, and we will route it to emergency plumbing if it needs a crew now.

Drain cleaning uses a cable to break up and pull out a clog in one drain, and it is the right fix for most single-fixture problems. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the whole pipe wall, so we use it for heavy grease, roots, or a clog that keeps coming back.
